What is Therapy?
Mental Health and Wellbeing Support at Breakaway South West Counselling
Are you wondering exactly what’s involved with therapy?
Would you like support with life’s challenges?
Do you want the freedom to talk openly and honestly about your feelings?
Seeking therapy is a big step towards being your healthiest self
Therapy can mean counselling or psychotherapy and involves meeting with a professional in order to explore, understand and resolve challenges you’re experiencing in life. These challenges can be focussed around behaviours, relationships, beliefs and feelings, and even physical issues or sensations.
What can therapy help with?
Everyone has their own reasons for seeking therapy as mental health and wellbeing is unique to everyone.
Some common issues include:
- Depression and Anxiety
- Sex and Relationship Problems
- Anger Management
- Coping with Stress
- Managing Change
- Addiction
- Eating Disorders
- Mood Instability
- Grief
- Self-Improvement and Personal Growth
How do I choose a therapist?
There are many therapists to choose from but how do you know when you’ve found ‘the one’ for you?
The decision to work with a particular therapist is a very personal one. No one else can tell you which therapist is right for you but the following questions might help:
Does the therapist specialise in, or have experience with, particular issues for which you are seeking therapy?
A therapist with plenty of experience of the issue you’re experiencing will likely have the most expertise in order to help you.
What is the therapist’s philosophy or approach to helping?
When choosing a therapist, it’s important to find a professional who has an approach and philosophy you feel comfortable with and confident in.
How does your therapist make you feel?
Do you feel as comfortable as possible to talk openly? Do you feel listened to? Does their personality meet your needs? It’s perfectly normal to feel anxious about the therapy process but part of a therapist’s job is to help you feel at ease.

What will I get out of therapy?
In addition to helping with mental health issues, therapy is a great tool for education, understanding your thoughts, feelings and behaviour, and developing strategies and coping mechanisms.
Therapy offers a safe and non-judgemental environment that will allow you to speak freely and explore things in your own way and at your own pace. Many people find the process to be a cathartic one and it can help you to live a happy and healthy life.
How long does therapy last?
How long you attend therapy is completely up to you. It can be a short term process or a long term one, and we can decide together how you can benefit and what works best for you.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy can vary, but my prices start from just £75 for an individual session lasting 50 minutes.
You can find out more about my pricing here.
